Types of Wood Flooring: A Complete Guide for U.S. Homes

Real wood flooring comes in three constructions: solid, engineered, and composite engineered. Everything else in a showroom describes something other than the material — parquet is a pattern, reclaimed is a source, prefinished is a finishing method. 1. Solid hardwood

One piece of timber, top to bottom, usually ¾” thick.

A ¾” plank has about ¼ inch of usable wood above the tongue. A full refinish removes roughly 0.8 mm; a heavy correction takes about 1.6 mm. That’s four to six refinishes — at 15–20 years between them, a floor that outlives you. That’s the whole argument for solid: it’s the only flooring you can keep resurfacing.

The limitation is moisture. Solid boards move more than engineered ones because nothing restrains them. To check a floor you own, pull a floor register and measure the solid band above the layered core. To check before buying, ask for the millimeter figure in writing — not “premium,” the number.

One caveat: hand-scraped and wire-brushed textures are cut into the wear layer. Sand them and you erase what you paid for.

3. Composite engineered

Real hardwood over a core that isn’t wood plies — HDF, MDF, magnesium oxide or rigid SPC. The point is water resistance: an SPC-backed plank with an oak veneer can go where a plywood core shouldn’t.

4. Reclaimed wood

5. Parquet

A pattern, not a material — herringbone, chevron, basketweave, Versailles. The boards can be solid or engineered. A herringbone floor and a straight-lay floor can come from the identical box.

6. Prefinished vs site-finished

A finishing method, not a construction — both solid and engineered come either way.

Prefinished ships with a factory UV-cured, aluminum-oxide finish. That’s the most abrasion-resistant finish available, and it can’t be replicated on site. The trade-off is micro-beveled seams between boards, and damage means replacing the board rather than spot-repairing it.

Site-finished floors are sanded and finished in place, giving a seamless surface with no bevels, any stain color you want, and the ability to spot-repair. The finish will be less abrasion-resistant than factory UV-cured.

The wood-look alternatives

Bamboo is a grass, and the label hides three different products. Horizontal and vertical bamboo sits near 1,380 Janka; strand-woven runs 3,000–5,000, harder than nearly any hardwood. Carbonizing for color softens it by 20–30%. So “bamboo is hard” and “bamboo dents” are both true — ask which construction and what the score is. Check emissions compliance on imports.

Three things Janka doesn’t tell you. It describes the surface species only — a 2 mm hickory veneer isn’t “1820-hard” as a system. Grain variation hides damage better than hardness prevents it, so with dogs, texture buys you more than 200 Janka points. And almost every “scratch” is in the finish, not the wood.

Quick notes: white oak has displaced red oak in current design because its neutral tone suits light and gray finishes. Why humidity matters more than species

More wood floors fail from indoor climate than from anything else, and it’s the reason the three constructions behave differently in the first place.

The NWFA target is 30–50% relative humidity and 60–80°F, year-round. In that range wood sits at 6–9% moisture content, which is where it’s manufactured to live.

Too dry in winter and boards shrink, opening gaps. Too humid and they swell, cup at the edges, and eventually buckle. Engineered and composite cores resist this; solid wood doesn’t.
